Roman Acqueducts Park

We will start our full day out of Rome city centre visiting the Aqueduct Archaeological Park.  The mighty arches, running through Rome’s outskirts, are still there to witness Ancient Romans engineering abilities. Indeed, Aqueducts provided huge amounts of water to the city centre. In Ancient times, eleven aqueducts furnished clean water to public baths, imperial mansion and thousands of private homes.

Castel Gandolfo: Pope’s retreat until 2016

The small town counts about 8000 residents and it’s very popular with religious tourists and Da Vinci Code wanderers. The town had been Popes’ summer retreat,  but on 2016 Pope ordered that the apostolic palace and gardens at Castel Gandolfo should be turned into a museum, since he didn’t plan to use it as a summer retreat anymore. The imposing palace overlooks Lake Albano and it takes its name from the castle built by Genoese Gandolfi family.
That said, the main piazza, the church and a Barberini fountain are well worth the short trip here. In the summer months, however, the star of the show isn’t the cobblestone town itself, but rather its location. Sitting on the top of a hill, Castel Gandolfo overlooks Lago di Albano, a huge lake where Romans come to swim, sail and sunbathe on the shore.

Ariccia, it’s time for tasty “Porchetta”

Ariccia is one of the quieter town of Castelli Romani with a real, lived-in feel; the central castle is still a private property. We will have a stop here to have a taste of the local “Porchetta”, as this specialty is really well-known throughout Italy. It’s complimentary, as we would like to show “as the Romans do”.

Frascati, charming town just outside Rome

Romans have been coming to these romantic and picturesque hillside towns for centuries. Here, they can have relax, drink some good wine, and enjoy the breathtaking views.
Now, we are heading toward Frascati, a delightful hill-town. As we enter the town, we meet Cardinal Aldobrandini’s Villa. It’s a 1598 monumental country palace-estate with baroque gardens.
After, we can make a stop to buy a traditional “pupazza”, a tipical flour and honey cookie, representing a woman with three breasts. People has it that the extra breast gives Frascati wine instead of milk.
