Rome off-the-beaten-path – Janiculum Hill

Sometimes called the “Balcony of Rome,” the Janiculum Hill boasts the best view of Rome. From here you can really enjoy a stunning panorama over the city. Rome is known as the city of seven hills, but actually Rome has more. As the Janiculumis west of the Tiber and outside the ancient city,  it’s not counted among the ancient seven. Yet, it’s close to the historic center, just above the Vatican and Trastevere neighbourhood.
According to one of the oldest legends in Roman mythology, this was the site of a city founded by the god Janus, hence its name.

Acqua Paola Fountain sits on the Janiculum Hill

The fountain offers romantic vistas of the city and its domes. Recently restored and featured in the opening scene of Paolo Sorrentino’s Oscar-winning The Great Beauty, this monumental white fountain was built in 1612 to celebrate the re-opening of a 2nd-century aqueduct that still brings water to Trastevere from Lake Bracciano, 40 km north of Rome. Four of the fountain’s six columns are made from red granite and came from the facade of the old St Peter’s Basilica, while much of the marble comes from the Roman Forum. An hidden garden is behind the marble arches which is included in your tour.

Tiber Island

Rome off-the-beaten-path tour takes you at Tiber Island. In the middle of the Tiber is a boat-shaped island. For most tourists, Tiber Island is only a convenient crossing point, rather than a destination in itself, but the island is worth exploring in-depth. This lovely island is located in the middle of river Tiber and offers great views during the day. This strange little island in the heart of Rome is imbued with legends and far-fetched tales. It’s connected to the city by the Cestio and Fabricio bridges: the first was built in 46 BC and joins the southern part of the island with Trastevere; the second was built in 62 BC, making it the oldest bridge in the city. The island connects Trastevere to the Jewish Ghetto and it’s the world’s smallest inhabited island. For sure one of the charming places to put on you bucket list while visiting Rome.

Trastevere

Trastevere is a medieval neighbourhood located on the west bank of the Tiber, is indeed a charming place for a relaxing stroll or a tasty dinner. Its cobbled lanes, houses with lopsided façades and workshops give it a village feel. It’s not too difficult to step off the main routes and escape the masses. The heart of Trastevere is Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, a pedestrian square, where you can find several restaurants and bars. On the south side of Viale Trastevere streets are much quieter and there are several  restaurants where you can enjoy a peaceful meal at an outdoors patio.  In Trastevere you can live and feel an “old world” athmosphere. It’s absolutely amazing.
