The Archeological site of Ancient Ostia

While constructed similar to Pompeii, Ostia Antica offers a much broader panorama of average Roman citizen’s life at the end of I century AD and this is the reason why is called “the better Pompeii”.
Sitting on the top row of the ancient arena, you can look at the ruins of Ostia and  let your  imagination take you 2,000 years back, to the days when this was ancient Rome’s seaport and a thriving commercial centre. You will be overwhelmed by the size and beauty of the city. Moreover, as if you travel back in time you will admire its public and private bath structures. You view the perfectly intact mosaics and marble slabs as we visit locations such as the bakery, taverns, ancient fast-food restaurants, private homes and fountains.

Ostia, at the mouth of the Tiber River, founded around 620 BC

Later, around 400 BC, Rome conquered Ostia and made it a naval base, complete with a fort. By AD 150, when Rome controlled all the Mediterranean, Ostia served as its busy commercial port.
Even if rich in history, a few visitors make this short trip from downtown Rome. Maybe it is the most underappreciated sight in all of Italy.
