Puglia Beach and Culture Tour
Lecce, Alberobello, Martina Franca, Ostuni and relax on the beach

Puglia is ruggedly beautiful, where the magnificent architecture of Lecce, ‘hobbit’-like conical trulli in Alberobello and local cuisine offer a delightfully different experience of Italy. Blessed with abundant sunshine and fringed by the bountiful waters of the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, Puglia is a land of plenty. Unsurprisingly, its natural riches have attracted a host of invaders throughout history – ancient Greeks colonised the area in the 8th century BC, then came the Romans, Byzantines, Saracens, Normans, Spanish and Bourbons. Each culture has left a distinct footprint, from the local dialect peppered with Greek expressions to the Moorish ambience of the narrow streets of Lecce, where traders’ wares spill out onto the cobbled streets. It is this melting of cultures that makes Puglia delightfully different. Everything that you would expect from a journey to Italy is there in abundance,

The accomodation

Only 10 minutes by car from Ostuni and set in 100 hectares of private parkland, the resort takes its inspiration from the “White City” of Ostuni, with all the buildings blending perfectly into the landscape and arranged around a central square. The beautiful sandy coves and cliff areas are reserved for guests, and equipped with deckchairs and umbrellas. The “Centrale” restaurant with table service for breakfast, lunch and dinner, offers delicious Mediterranean food and a selection of Italian recipes, so Guests can always enjoy the taste of home when on holiday. Drinks are included with meals. There are 2 bars: one in the central square of the complex, close to the pool and the restaurant terrace; and the other on the beach.  There are 3 private beaches around the complex: small coves with fine sand equipped with umbrellas and sunbeds, and a short walk through the pinewoods.

Tour itinerary

Day 1: Bari/Brindisi airport – Ostuni

Transfer by private bus to the resort. Room check-in and time for leisure to enjoy resort and beach facilities before dinner. (D)

Day 2: FD Ostuni – Polignano a Mare

After breakfast, Guests will meet the English-speaking tour guide for an half day tour of the “white city”. Ostuni is a gleaming white mix of houses, churches, and charming piazzas spread over a hilltop surrounded by quaint countryside and endless olive groves.

Appropriately nicknamed la città bianca or “the white city”, Ostuni’s fortified historical old town is located on a steep hill just a few kilometers from the sea. That’s allows to have lovely views of the Adriatic blue and crystal water. Simply enjoy wandering the streets and alleyways, checking out the historic buildings, and enjoy the panoramic views of the Adriatic. The Museo Civiltà Preclassica Murgia Meridionale Ostuni, the town’s archaeology museum, is a surprising treat. Housed in a former church and adjoining monastery, the museum features artifacts documenting a mind-blowing 30,000 years of human history in the region.

Back to the resort for lunch, before going to Polignano a Mare, which is prettier than a paint, a shining gem on the coast of the Valle d’Itria. Perched dramatically atop a 20 metre-high craggy ravine above the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic, Polignano a Mare truly lives up to its name and literally could not be any more ‘at sea’. Its centro storico – an atmospheric maze of winding streets, sun-bleached buildings, and old churches – reveals intriguing glimpses of the sparkling blue sea at every turn. You may find yourself getting lost in the winding streets, but you won’t mind at all. Before you know it, you will have reached one of three panoramic terraces offering breathtaking views of the beautiful Adriatic Sea.

Back to the resort for dinner. (Meal:B,L,D)

Day 3: Day at leisure

Enjoy resort and beach facilities. Full board at the buffet restaurant. (B,L,D)

Day 4: FD Alberobello e Martina Franca

After breakfast, Guests to Alberobello will meet our English-speaking tour guide. Alberobello is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its maze of hilly cobblestone paths lined with charming conical-roofed trulli. The white town seems straight out of a children’s story book. Alberobello has over 1,500 densely packed trulli. These buildings are unique to the Itria Valley and were originally built as field shelters or for storage, and in some cases as dwellings for rural families. Since trulli are generally found dotting the countryside and never in such a large concentration, Alberobello certainly offers an unusual sight. There are two excellent museums in Alberobello that provide a better understanding of the trulli and they are included in our tour.

After lunch in Alberobello (not Included), tour continues to Martina Franca one of Puglia’s most beautiful towns, overflowing with elegant Baroque architecture and delightful trattorias specializing in exquisite cold cuts (capocollo ham). Its centro storico is an alluring mix of narrow twisting alleys and dazzling white houses interspersed with sunny open piazzas.
A bit bigger than the neighboring towns, it has long been the commercial center of the region, which is evident in the centuries-old palazzi, and exquisitely ornate basilicas. The largest church in Martina Franca is Basilica di San Martino, a grand baroque and rococo construction. The 17th century Palazzo Ducale has rooms that are free to visit with frescoed walls.

Back to the resort  for dinner. (Meal:B, D)

Day 5: Day at leisure

Enjoy resort and beach facilities. Full board at the buffet restaurant. (B,L,D)

Day 6: Lecce HD + Masseria olive oil tasting

Lecce is the Baroque masterpiece of southern Italy. Sometimes described as the ‘Florence of the South’, Lecce is really a fancy destination. It’s just a gorgeous place, and the historic centre’s small size, restricted to cars, allows to wander among narrow streets of golden sandstone, hidden piazzas, extravagantly carved baroque churches.
At the heart of  the city stands a half-buried 2nd-century Roman amphitheater, and everywhere else, elaborately decorated churches and palaces built in local honey-hued stone.
The historic centre of Lecce has three entrances, Porta Napoli, Porta S.Biagio and Porta Rudiae. It is here, in the ancient heart of the city, that Lecce’s elegant baroque palazzi and churches can be found. The finest example of Puglian baroque is the Basilica of Santa Croce, a wonderfully ornate edifice, next to the Palazzo dei Celestini. Exuberant figurative, floral and mythological motifs characterize the façades of both buildings.

Lecce Papier-mâchè

Well-known for its Baroque style, not many tourists know that the city of Lecce is also famous for the papier-mâché art. So, what is Papier-mâché? The art of papier-mâché in Lecce, a phenomenon unique to Puglia, dates back to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In this time the development of arts was linked to the increasing number of churches and monuments. The craftsmen did not have access to precious materials, and as such they were forced to make use of poorer materials such as straw, rags and glue. The small shops around Lecce cathedral are full of painted figures of all sizes, some religious, others are peasants going about their daily tasks. During the workshop  the skillful artisan will explain and show the different phases of the production, which is still carried out according to the ancient tradition handed down from generation to generation.

Olive oil tasting

In the afternoon, a short bus ride will take you to a local farm, where olive oil is produced according to the biological method. You will enjoy a walk among centuries-old olive trees and a tour to the onsite oil mill (frantoio) to learn about the processes of making premium olive oil. A tasting will follow. Back to the hotel for dinner. (B,D)
